Ballet Yuma presents “Works by Award Winning Choreographer Daniel Marshall” at 7:00pm on Friday, March 19 at the Historic Yuma Theater. The evening will feature Marshall’s works performed by his company, LaDiego Dance Theater, of San Diego, California, and his piece The Orchid commissioned and performed by Ballet Yuma. Marshall will also be present to reveal his choreographic approach, ideas, and inspiration relating to the works being performed. Tickets, which are $10.00 for adults and $6.00 for children 12 and under, are available at the Yuma Art Center and at the door. This performance is made possible in part by a grant from the City of Yuma Arts and Culture Division.
In 1997, Daniel Marshall received a Tommy Award for Best Male Performer/Choreographer. Dance Magazine has recognized him as one of its “25 to Watch”, and in 2002 he received Regional Dance America’s National Choreography Award NE. Currently the Artistic Director of LaDiego Dance Theater, Marshall has also been the director of San Diego Contemporary Dance Ensemble and San Diego Civic Youth Ballet, and has choreographed many works for a variety of companies which have been seen across the United States as well as internationally.
Kathleen Sinclair, Co-Artistic Director of Ballet Yuma says, “This will be a very unique opportunity for Yuma - to see really outstanding choreography and also get insight to the artist’s vision; his ideas and approach to the works.”
LaDiego Dance Theater is currently in its 6th season and its stated mission is to inspire participation in the power, passion and beauty of dance. Marshall say that LaDiego is, “...about re-invention and breaking new grounds in this industry. We are excited to be apart the new outlook in dance and in the development of the performing artist.”
Ballet Yuma, a non-profit Arts performance and education organization, is in its 17th season under the artistic direction of Jon Cristofori and Kathleen Sinclair, and is recognized as exceptional on the national level. The sole representative from Arizona in Regional Dance America, Ballet Yuma’s graduates have gone on to dance professionally with highly regarded companies including San Francisco Ballet, Sacramento Ballet, Houston Ballet, American Ballet Theatre’s Studio Company, Boston Ballet, Ballet Memphis, Miami City Ballet, Les Grands Ballet Canadiens de Montreal, Texas Ballet Theater, Les Ballet Trockadero de Monte Carlo, Trey McIntyre Project, Company C, Louisville Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, and Missouri Contemporary.
Daniel Marshall began his dance career in California at the San Diego Creative School of Performing Arts. Soon after Graduation, he went to New York to accept a scholarship at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
While Mr. Marshall may have thought he would be spending a lot more time as a student, Cleo Parker Robinson had other plans for him. She brought Daniel back to Denver, CO. to become a member of her company. During his four years in Denver Mr. Marshall was able to develop his style and travel across the globe to places including Germany, Kenya, Poland, and Russia.
By 1997, as an accomplished dancer, Mr. Marshall had made his way back to California to dance and choreograph. He did guest performances with Lula Washington Dance Theatre in Los Angeles and became Artistic Director of the San Diego Contemporary Dance Ensemble. Mr. Marshall acted not only as Director but also the company’s only choreographer. Under his direction the company grew from eight members to twelve members and performed throughout the city regularly. During this time he set several pieces including Lover’s Lament and Blessed Assurance. Mr. Marshall received the 1997 Tommy Award for Best Male Performer/Choreographer.
In 1999, Mr. Marshall found himself Departing for Dayton, Ohio to become a member of the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, and become one of its the premiere dancers. In 2001 Dance Magazine named Mr. Marshall one of its “25 to Watch.”
He also found several choreographic homes in the Dayton area. He has set ballets for Gem City Ballet and South Dayton Ballet. Both are members of Regional Dance America. Mr. Marshall Received National Choreography Award NE in 2002. In addition he has set ballets on Dayton’s Contemporary Dance Company I & II which also tours regionally,nationally and internationally.
Mr. Marshall has also served as Artistic Director for San Diego Civic Youth Ballet from 2005-2006. In 2006, Mr. Marshall set work on San Diego Dance Theater (where he is also a dancer) and danced with California Ballet. Mr. Marshall directed and choreographed “Cats” the musical for San Diego Junior Theater. He has become a recognized Choreographer and is now Artistic Director/Founder of LaDiego Dance Theater.
